There are numerous private experts on art authenticity but they are often expensive and cumbersome to deal with. Many have never authenticated anything and routinely reject any painting they are asked to assess. Some make it a policy to refuse to look at any newly discovered painting. Unless your work is a "masterpiece" it will be rejected immediately by many private experts. Obviously, not all paintings are "masterpieces," or by "master" artists. Even the most famous artists produced only a few recognized "masterpieces."

Many experts stopped learning about authentication decades ago.

They look at a painting and compare it with what they remember about something similar. This is an outmoded way of going about art authentication.

Provenance and the relevant literature might be consulted by some auction houses. They tend to reject works that don't have an easily traceable history. Most catalogues raisonnés are incomplete; they are published works and are typically not updated.

There are laboratories that test pigments or take infrared photographs. Unfortunately, this is not enough to authenticate a painting. Lab work won't demonstrate attribution or a host of other significant questions.
